Marcy and I just got home from one of our favorite holiday parties of the year - special friends with awesome food and a great time catching up with each other.
We walked in the door so appreciative of yet another night out on a date and also that we have kids old enough now that are able to stay home by themselves without costing us the extra expense of a babysitter. When I got home, however, my daughter (14 years old) caught me off guard with a quick exchange of conversation. Here's how it went:
Makela: "Dad, I meant to ask you this before you went to your party, but can I borrow your shirt next week for ugly shirt day?"
Me: "Sure. Which one do you want to borrow?" I've got a number of funny graphic t-shirts I thought she was referring to....
Makela: "The one you're wearing!"
Me: "What?! What's wrong with the shirt I'm wearing?"
Makela: "Seriously Dad, it's like leaves and polka dots. It's UGLY!"
So, apparently I wore an ugly shirt tonight to my favorite holiday party of the year where I met some really great new people and visited with some of my favorite people! The really sad part, is that this shirt, is one of my favorite shirts! Maybe this is a sign I am getting old.... or maybe it's a sign that my daughter's sense of style and my own just don't jive....which probably leads me back to being old.
Just be comforted by the fact that fashion does in fact recycle itself! Skinny jeans are back in and so are leggings and bright colors a phenomenon that I have not experienced since the early 90's when Vanilla Ice and New Kids on the Block ruled the radio air waves! So maybe in a decade or so this will be cool again!
ReplyDeleteI agree totally with Makela...UGLY shirt! (I didn't give it to you did I?) But think of it this way, people probably will remember you, i.e. "You know, Ryon, the guy in that ugly shirt!" or "You know, Ryon, the guy who was wearing that shirt that looked like something your Dad would wear!"
ReplyDeleteLove you,
Your favorite mom
