12.6.12 - National Champs

One of the fun things about doing this blog over the years has been that while the intent is to document and share the events and experiences of the season, I can't help but look back at the entire year and reflect.  Reflection on the year past is inherently part of the experience of the season.  As one calendar year is completed, we prepare for another and in doing so look back often before looking forward.  There has been a lot that has happened this year I can and will reflect on, but tonight it was about a National Championship as Marcy, Makela, and I sat on the couch reviewing the order forms for spirit wear and rings celebrating the Carmel HS Marching Band's (The Marching Greyhounds) National Championship last month!

When she told us at the end of her 8th grade year she wanted to do marching band, Marcy and I casually agreed it would be good for her without really knowing much about it ourselves.  She had just finished a couple years of swim club, how much more work could it be than that was?

In the words of 'kids these days' - OMG!

The final movement of "What a Tangled Web We Weave"
performed at Lucas Oil Stadium
I had no idea the level of commitment and how hard she was going to have to work over the next 6 months!  I've really never experienced anything like it.  But in the end, all that hard work paid off with an Indiana State Title and a Bands of America Grand National Championship. Basically, in her first year of marching band, they accomplished everything there was to accomplish - in a single year.  The experience has been awesome for the entire family and given us all a much greater appreciation for what these kids go through to perform at the level they do.  I hope it also taught Makela a lesson early in her high school career on the importance of hard work and commitment and that those traits pay off - maybe not in a state title or national title every time, but it was sure nice it worked out that way this year!

It's 10 minutes long, but it's a good 10 minutes.  Below is their performance from the State Finals.... it's pretty awesome!

Christmas Song of the Day

All I Want for Christmas Is You by Justin Bieber & Mariah Carey

When Mariah Carey released her original version back in 1994, it was great. With the help of the Biebs, it was revived last year.
